TOM Ingram is still in the hunt for Ginetta GT Supercup Championship despite being airlifted to hospital in his last race.

A clutch problem left the 19-year-old stranded on the grid at the start of race three at Knockhill.

He was hit by two cars at an estimated 95mph.

He said: “I pulled up to my grid position, the five-second board appeared, the red lights came on and I picked the revs up, but then when the lights went out and I released the clutch there was this almighty bang, and although the engine was still running, the car didn’t go anywhere..

“I was sat there with nothing to do but look in my mirrors, brace myself and wait for the inevitable ‘thud’.

“That pushed me to the left of the track, where I was hit again. The car was a real mess and I was lucky it didn’t catch fire, because it squashed the fuel tank, too.

“I tried to climb out, but my legs couldn’t support my weight and I fell over.”

Ingram was airlifted to Dundee Hospital before being discharged with with two badly bruised and swollen legs, perforated ligaments and damaged tendons.

However, despite the scare, Ingram is determined to continue his bid for yet another championship at Rockingham later this month.

Before the accident, two second place-finishes had cut the gap at the top from 72 points to 55 points.

However, he now has his work cut out with Tom Sharp more than 100 points clear.

Meanwhile, Wycombe’s John Rook is third in the Hot Hatch Championship after overcoming car problems to finish sixth at Lydden Hill. There are two rounds to go.
