THERE were no complaints from either side after today’s match between Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers was abandoned because of the weather.

The away end was twice struck by lightning and health and safety concerns led to the match being called off after 65 minutes, with Rovers 3-1 up.

Pirates boss Mark McGhee looked incandescent with rage as he led his players back down the tunnel, but he said after the game the decision was the correct one.

He said: “We have to accept the safety officer had the interest of both sets of supporters at heart. He had to make the decision.

“We’re obviously disappointed as we were winning at the time but totally satisfied the decision was made in good faith.”

Wanderers manager Gary Waddock said: “It was for health and safety reasons so you have to say of course it is [the correct decision].

“As we came out for the second half with the grey skies we had and the rain, it was awful conditions.

“You can understand Bristol Rovers being disappointed with the scoreline being 3-1, but health and safety is more important than any result.”

Striker Richard Logan scored his first Wanderers goal, but with the abandonment it will be chalked off.

Despite that he was relieved at the decision to call the game off.

He said: “I kept talking to their lads. Some of them have kids and they were saying they want to see them grow up, they don’t want to get hit by lightning. We were having a bit of banter about it.

“They were gutted because they were 3-1 up and we’d do the same if we were at their place, but for everyone’s safety it was the right call.”
