BLUES goalkeeper Nikki Bull is treating Saturday's Capital One Cup tie with Watford as a bonus pre-season friendly.

He said his focus is on Wanderers' first League Two game of the season at York City the following week instead of the cup tie at Vicarage Road.

Wanderers will be looking to pull off a shock in the newly-named competition as they aim to make new Hornets boss Gianfranco Zola's first game in charge an unhappy one, but Bull has his sights set elsewhere.

Bull said: "It's another game we're not expected to win. We can use it as a kind of pre-season game but the extra edge of wanting to do well in the cup games. We'll be testing ourselves.

"Wycombe away at Watford, I don't think anyone's going to expect us to go there and win. We're looking to cause an upset and will give it our all, but it's all about York and getting the ball rolling. We've got a hell of a tough start.

"I'm sure the crowd will be pretty big for Zola's first game."

Bull thinks Blues will need to step things up a gear if they're to pull off a shock result against their near neighbours from the Championship.

Manager Gary Waddock said he was now looking for performances from his players after Saturday's win at Cambridge, having built up their fitness over pre-season, and Bull shares his view.

He said: "I think we can look back on pre-season so far and say there are areas of our game we've worked at and I think we've shown we've improved, and we've got to go and fine tune a few other things.

"We've had a few tough tests. In the majority of games we've acquitted ourselves well but in the majority of them we could have done better."
