WASPS 36, BORDEAUX 13.

WASPS will host Biarritz at Adams Park in the quarter-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup after a bonus point victory over Bordeaux at Adams Park this afternoon.

Like last week they left it late with two tries in the final ten minutes capping a performance that was well worth the four tries.

The win wraps up a fine effort in Europe which sees them finish top of Pool 3 with five wins and four bonus points from their six games.

But, despite those impressive statistics, Bayonne kept them honest until the end and Wasps kicked off this afternoon knowing only a win would be good enough for the quarter-finals - and only a bonus point win would be good enough to avoid a trip to Stade Francais in the last eight over the Easter weekend.

With that in mind the home side lit up an entertaining first 40 with two moments of attacking brilliance from probably their two most attackingly brilliant players.

First it was Elliot Daly in the 17th minute, taking a pass out wide and side-stepping two tacklers before racing into a closing gap in the corner to score from 30m out.

The lightning centre went over with two Frenchman hanging off him, before Joe Simpson tried to match him for the spectacular with a break from half way.

He whizzed between two Bordeaux players and suddenly the pitch seemed to open up for him to score another solo effort, but he was slightly off balance as he tried to round the last man and full back Laurent Ferreres brought him down.

Wasps could really have done with another score at that point.

After conceding an intercept try to Vunga Lilo in the sixth minute, converted by Camille Lopez, they were finding it tough going and were still 7-5 behind.

A Ryan Davis penalty after 22 minutes did finally put them in front and they stretched that lead to 13-7 by the interval when Matt Everard touched down in the 38th minute after Simpson and Jack Wallace picked apart the French defence.

In truth, Wasps were comfortably superior and would have had the game won by the break had Davis not had another scattergun afternoon off the tee.

The stand in fly half missed four of his first five kicks at the posts and those points began weigh heavily in the second period as Bordeaux knocked over two kicks of their own – one of which was a 55m monster from Laurent Ferreres - to put the result in doubt.

Davis did step up to land his next two to keep Wasps' noses in front at 19-13 but, with 20 minutes remaining and two tries still required for the bonus, Stade Fancais was beginning to loom large.

The players must have thought so because the final quarter was complete Wasps pressure. From minutes 60 to 70 they didn't once retreat further than ten metres from the Bordeaux line and Richard Haughton and Simpson both had tries disallowed in that period.

The intense pressure took its toll on the French, who conceded a string of penalties and had Hugh Chalmers sin binned for another infringement before referee Neil Hennessy eventually gave Wasps the penalty try the home crowd had been baying for.

With a Davis penalty and conversion on top of that, the match was finally save at 29-13 and all that remained in the final stages was the bonus point fourth try.

With Bordeaux on the attack, it looked a long way off but with four minutes left a home quarter final was finally signed, sealed and delivered with a length-of-the-field try.

Tom Lindsay touched it down with a run in from 35m, but Haughton was also instrumental in creating the score which sets up a mouthwatering clash with Biarritz.
