FIVE goals in their last five games might not be an avalanche, it’s hardly a drought though - but so hot have the Beaconsfield forwards been that manager Byron Walton has called for a return to form ahead of tomorrow’s crunch game with second-placed St Neots.
He said: “Our forwards have been prolific this season but they’ve had a bit of drought recently.
“We’re still creating chances. In the last couple of games we’ve had one on ones but we’ve just missed them.
“Unfortunately that’s the way it goes with forwards sometimes, you have your little blips.
“They’re still looking good in training, they’re looking sharp and itching to play again.”
It’s not surprising.
The Rams haven’t had a match in a fortnight and that was a shock 2-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened North Greenford United.
They had hoped to put that defeat behind them against Marlow last weekend, but the big Bucks derby was frozen off.
Walton said: “We were disappointed not to have a game, but a few players were carrying niggles so not playing will probably help us more than hinder us.”
However, it does mean they take on the title contenders on the back of a loss.
Walton said: “It’s a massive game for us. At some time in the season we were going to have a blip and it’s just a matter of getting back on track. St Neots is going to be very hard for us though and if we get a point against them I’d be very happy.
“It’s the other games we’ve got to make sure we pick up points from, but we’re still in a very good position for the top five.”
Meanwhile, Marlow’s concerns are at the other end of the table.
They remain rooted to the bottom after Saturday’s postponement and they were frustrated again on Tuesday when their scheduled trip to North Greenford, who are third from bottom, also fell foul of the weather.
Frustratingly, they don’t return to league action now until January 28 when Biggleswade Town are the visitors.
Meanwhile, Chalfont St Peter go to Bedworth tomorrow after a 3-3 draw at home to Northwood last weekend.
