RICHARD Birkett is the sort of player they invented the term ‘club servant’ for and if they handed out trophies for durability he’d have a cabinet full.
He’s won more than his share of silverware anyway, but no one can argue the lock hasn’t deserved what he’s got in a Wasps career set to reach 250 appearances on Sunday.
He said: “I definitely didn’t think I would last this long. It’s been bruising but a lot of fun and I am very proud of the fact that I am still playing and had such a lot of fun along the way. It has been a fantastic experience doing it all with Wasps and I am very lucky.”
Birkett made his debut for the black and golds in 1999 and will join a cast list of Lawrence Dallaglio, Alex King, Josh Lewsey, Simon Shaw and Joe Worsley if he reaches the 250-game milestone this weekend.
