THE Amlin Challenge Cup remains a break in the clouds for Wasps as they scored two late tries in Italy to remain on course for a place in the quarter finals.
They beat Rovigo 32-11 to claim a bonus point victory that moves them two points ahead of Bayonne with just one pool match remaining, against Bordeaux at Adams Park next Sunday.
However, the victory was not nailed down until Ryan Davis and Richard Haughton crossed in the final five minutes of the game.
Until then, a stubborn Rovigo outfit had given almost as good at they'd got and with 74 minutes on the clock the score was just 15-11 to the black and golds.
But Davis knocked over a penalty to give Dai Young's team breathing space before fireworks at the death turned a battling display into a blistering one.
Davide Duca had actually put the hosts in front with a penalty after 13 minutes, but Sam Jones crossed shortly afterwards to put Wasps in front for the first time.
However, Davis missed the conversion and then Elliot Daly was wide with a penalty to deny Wasps the breathing space they wanted.
Instead, Duca was on target again off the tee to restore Rovigo's lead and it wasn't until Daly went over for Wasps' second try five minutes before the break that they finally edged away.
Davis' conversion made it 12-6 at the interval, but if they were hoping for a more straightforward second half they would have been disappointed.
In fact, had Duca not missed a conversion after Samuele Pace's 49th minute try the lead would have changed hands once again.
But a Davis penalty moved the score to 15-11 and that's how it remained for most of a tense second period as Duca and Davis both missed further chances off the tee.
However, Davis was on target again off the tee after 77 minutes before the fly half made certain of the victory with a sizzling 40m burst for try number three.
He added the extras himself before, in the final play of the match, Haughton secured the bonus point by finishing off an attack which had begun deep in Wasps' territory.
Davis' conversion took his individual points tally to 17 with the last act of the game.
