THE boot is on the other foot this season – for once Marlow will start as underdogs when they take on Beaconsfield in the Southern League Central Division on Saturday.
It’s quite a reversal. Normally Marlow would expect to be mid-table and upwards while Beaconsfield’s recent years have been marked by relegation scraps in the springtime.
However, the sides will meet at Oak Tree Road tomorrow with Beaconsfield third and Marlow rock bottom with just one league win since early September.
Manager Kevin Stone said: “We beat them 1-0 earlier in the season, but we were luck to win.
“I remember walking off thinking they wouldn’t be in the bottom three this time. But I didn’t expect us to be bottom. It’s a bit of a culture shock.”
The last week has just about summed up Marlow’s plight.
They led 2-1 into injury time at Bedford last Saturday but had to settle for a draw, and a few days later created and missed a plethora in a 2-1 defeat to Chertsey.
Stone said: “We were pretty down at 5pm last Saturday, but I didn’t know what to say at 10pm on Tuesday.
“We haven’t created that many chances in games that we’ve won four or five nil.
“But to miss them all and then to get beat as well...that’s why we are where we are in the table.”
Aaron Couch was their only scorer on the night, but he was also the main culprit as a spate of chances went begging.
However, there is some hope for the beleagured Blues.
Adam Harmon returned from Flackwell Heath a week ago and settled back into the groove nicely with both goals in the 2-2 draw at Bedfont – volleys with both feet.
However, when you’re struggling, every silver lining has a cloud...
Stone said: “Adam was a shining light for us, but we didn’t want to count our chickens when the ref said four extra minutes.
“In the sixth of those extra four they scored.
“We still had time to take the centre, win a corner and for Alex Cairns to beat their keeper with a free header, but it was cleared off the line. Then the referee blew.”
Beaconsfield have their own mission though.
They were surprisingly beaten 3-0 at home by North Greenford United last time out.
