GOALSCORER Joel Grant says he won’t be knocking on Gary Waddock’s office door this morning to ask for a starting place after his late equaliser on Saturday.
The winger has been left on the sidelines in recent weeks but reminded everybody what he’s capable of by smashing home a long range shot in injury time to ensure Wanderers came away from their trip to Notts County with a well earned point.
But he said all he’s going to do is keep his head down and let his performances on the training ground do the talking.
Grant said: “The key to it is all sticking together and when you get the shirt, try to take your chance.
“I’ve never been one to sulk. If I’m not in the team I always look at myself first hand and feel if I can do better and try to do better in training.
“The manager makes the decisions. All I’ve got to do is try and perform how I did today in the second half.
“Me and the gaffer have a good relationship. All the boys work hard, even the ones who aren’t in the team.
“You have some players who will go and knock and ask questions, but I always look at myself and try to improve myself. You’ve got to be a good egg in the camp, especially when it’s not going well. When you’ve got a few sulking it makes it more difficult. I try to stay bubbly and do what I can do.”
He added: “Gary keeps everybody focused. It’s not just the ones that are starting, it’s the ones on the bench like myself. You’ve got to play a part and second half we really showed what we were capable of against a not bad side.”
The close-season capture from Crewe said Blues had finally got their reward for some promising performances, with the 1-1 draw at Meadow Lane ending a run of three defeats in a row.
He said: “All season we’ve put in some good performances and not quite got the right result. Today I think we can be happy with a draw. Being 1-0 down with ten minutes to go, you’ve always got to be happy with a point.
“We stopped that losing streak we were on. To get a point, hopefully we will take some confidence from that now and take it into our next game.
“I wouldn’t say it’s early [in the season] but we’ve still got enough time to get out the position we’re in.
“I’m over the moon with the goal. Three points would have been better but to get a draw and to get it the way we did is a good feeling.”
Describing the goal, Grant said: “When I first got it, I knew Grant Basey made a run on the outside and I’ve gone to play to him and seen the two defenders go with him, so I’ve come inside and thought ‘I have got to shoot’. I’m delighted to hit the target and it’s gone in.”
