AN Amersham and Wycombe College student has signed up with one of the biggest names in rugby league.
Jamie Acton has joined Wigan Warriors’ under 20s squad after being spotted by a club scout.
The 18-year-old, formerly of Gerrards Cross, started playing rugby at John Hampden Grammar School in High Wycombe and received a scholarship while played for Saint Benedict’s School in Ealing.
Acton, inset, has also played for Hemel Stags and London Wasps before being scouted to train with the Great Britain amateur rugby league team. Now his playing ability has been recognised by a Wigan Warriors scout, which led to him joining the under 20s squad at the DW Stadium.
Acton’s role model is Keith Senior, an England international who has won every honour in the English domestic game. He said: “If I manage to achieve half of what Keith has done I will be very happy.” To fulfil his dream of playing at the highest level, Acton has just started a strict training regime which includes up to six hours of gym and video analysis work per day with the Wigan Warriors first team.
He is studying BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services at Amersham and Wycombe College. His course tutor David Benson said: “Jamie always tries to be the best in everything he tackles and his assignment scores certainly reflect this.” Acton said: “If for any reason I don’t make it into the first team I would love to come back to college with my qualifications and coach. “The college has helped me a lot with my course and coaching and I thank them for being so supportive in what I am doing.”
