JONNY O'Connor has issued an ominous warning to rival clubs by saying the best of Wasps is yet to come.

The young flanker scored one of his side's two tries during Sunday's 30-26 win over London Irish in the Powergen Cup but admitted afterwards it felt more like a defeat.

He said: "We are not firing yet. We didn't lose but it was just like a loss because we didn't play well enough and sometimes you need that.

"Sometimes training might be a bit too relaxed and you need that intensity because without that you are not going to win things.

"We want to win the Premiership, do well in Europe and win as much as we can.

"We know we can do better. Every team wants to beat us especially London Irish and they always seem to give us a hard time and we've dug ourselves out of a hole again.

"There's definitely a lot more to come without a doubt."

The Irish international pointed to the abundance of young talent waiting in the wings at Wasps as one reason why the club can only get better.

He added: "We are playing well and have made a good start but with the younger players coming through, it's a case of raising the bar and working hard so we get better and better."

"There is a lot of competition for places. Wasps is a club that likes to progress and if you are not keeping with it, you are gone.

"We are always trying to raise the bar and improve and not stay where we are."

O'Connor was pleased with his score during last weekend's thrilling game and delighted to see Alex King's superb late drop goal from 30-metres fall between the posts to virtually guarantee the win.

He said: "It was nice to get a try and get the confidence up. It just opened up for me and I had a bit of luck.

"The ball just popped up and I was just happy to get over the line.

"Alex's drop was quite amazing. I clicked what the call was and just stepped out of the way.

"It was an unbelievable kick but that's where his experience counts."

O'Connor had a short break away from Wasps recently to relax away from the game but admits he has returned ready for action.

He said: "I've had a break and needed a bit of time off to chill out. Wasps are pretty good and give you time when you need it.

"I've come back fresher and want to build on it and get involved in the November internationals."
