WYCOMBE Wanderers' Steve Williams is asking newly qualified drivers "to do the smart thing" and sign up for a subsidised driving scheme to enhance their skills, writes Leila Blackburn.
Pass Plus is specifically aimed at new drivers to make them safer on the road and is being offered to drivers in Buckinghamshire at a discounted rate in a bid to reduce the number of accidents among 17 to 24-year-olds.
Latest figures have shown there were a seven fatalities in Buckinghamshire in that age group last year.
The 22-year-old goalie was the first person to complete the scheme when it was launched at his club's home ground in Sands, last Saturday.
He told Midweek: "It's never too late to consider taking further driver training, there is always something new to learn about skills and attitude."
"I would fully recommend new drivers to take advantage of the subsidised scheme it's the smart thing to do."
Newly qualified drivers account for ten per cent of all drivers in the UK and are involved in 20 per cent of all crashes. Buckinghamshire County Council is offering anyone who passed his or her test less than 12 months ago a £75 bursary towards the cost of obtaining a Pass Plus qualification. The scheme consists of six driver-training modules, which include town driving, all weather driving, out of town, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways and motorways.
Course completion can also entitle drivers to cheaper car insurance.
