MEMBERS of a gym have returned from a charity bicycle ride from London to Paris, after raising nearly £40,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The 27 riders, from the Marlow Club, in Fieldhouse Lane, trained relentlessly before the three-day trip on July 1, and were joined by five staff members of the charity.
Steven Smith, whose mother Genifer died eight years ago from the disease, said: "The ride was great though very draining and very humbling.
"For many it was a very personal challenge, with parents or friends who have been struck by or lost to illness. "
Torrential rain fell on the streets to the ferry in Newhaven and was the first thing to greet them as they arrived in France.
Support was provided by Classic Tours, a specialist company in worldwide charity challenges. They equipped the team with a doctor, physiologist, mechanic and two support vehicles carrying food, luggage and spares for the 210-mile ride.
The riders arrived at the Eiffel Tower on the Sunday at 6pm.
