STEVE Claridge has been appointed manager of Millwall just weeks after turning down the chance to extend his playing career with Wycombe.

The Chairboys offered the 39-year-old a one-year deal after he scored four goals for Wycombe last season but Claridge slammed the offer as derisory.

Now, after a 20-year playing career, he is embarking on his third stint as a manager and hoping it will be third time lucky.

His first foray into management was a short stint at Portsmouth from October 2000 to Ferbuary 2001 then his second ended in acrimony when he was sacked by non-league Weymouth following an FA Cup defeat at Thame United in October.

But Claridge, a former Millwall player, can't wait to give it another go.

He told the south London club's official website: "I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here previously and this is a challenge I just couldn't turn down. Everyone at Millwall knows me and knows what to expect. I'm now looking forward to getting started."

Millwall chairman Jeff Burnige, who also spoke to George Burley and ex-Cardiff boss Lennie Lawrence, is pleased to get Claridge on board.

He said: "The clinching factor for me, however, was his burning desire to manage Millwall. Steve has a passion for this club that the supporters can identify with."
