FANS of football and supporters of the community flocked to Causeway Stadium to watch a charity football match between the police and two Asian youth sides.

More than 300 people attended the game, which ended 1-1, and raised more than £700 for the John Radcliffe Cancer Unit in Oxford and the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital in Lahore, Pakistan.

The idea for the game came from young people and staff of The Green Street Youth & Community Centre (GSYCC) after the death of one of its members in November, 2003.

Staff and young people were deeply saddened when 19-year-old Nadeem Javed died of spinal cancer and decided to raise money in his memory.

Asim Mahmood, sports development worker at GSYCC, said: "For a lot of the lads who played, Thursday saw them realise a massive dream to play a football match at a proper stadium in front of family and friends.

"There was a great atmosphere around the ground and the support coming from the stand, both in terms of noise and donations, was fantastic."

Police and police community support officers from across the county joined forces to play 45 minutes against established local side AFC Sporting Wycombe and another half against Wycombe Asian Select XI, in the friendly match.

PC Damien Eatwell scored in the first half. A swap of teams later gave the Asian Select XI a chance to show their skills and they levelled the scores.

Sgt Nigel Headley, who helped co-ordinate the event and the police team, said: "It was great to see that many people turn out on an evening to support the teams and the charities."
