WANDERERS boss John Gorman is closing in on former Premiership ace Stefan Oakes.

The Blues chief was spotted coming out of a hotel with the player and is believed to be keen on ironing out a deal with the ex-Leicester City midfielder.

Gorman has been interested in the player ever since he saw the 26 year-old star for Notts County as the Magpies emerged with a 2-1 win at Adams Park.

And Blues striker Nathan Tyson would be delighted if the gaffer can pull off a deal for the right-footed player who is now out of contract at County.

In an interview for next weekend's Football League Play-off final matchday programme, Tyson rated Oakes as the best player to have played against Wycombe last season along with Macclesfield's Jon Parkin last season and would be delighted to have him providing the ammunition for him next season.

Tyson told the programme: "Oakes scored a brilliant goal against us. He used to be a Premiership player and his performance against us showed why."

Gorman is refusing to confirm who his targets are, but the Free Press has discovered that he has also been working overtime in his quest to find a striker to operate alongside last season's 22-goal top goal scorer Tyson in attack.

Gorman held talks with a striker from a higher league this week and has so far held discussions with four other hit-men as he looks to bolster a squad which finished the season in tenth spot.

Tony Craig has signed a new two-year deal with Millwall, dashing Wanderers' hopes of signing the left back.

Blues had the youngster on loan last season and were keen to swoop if Millwall did not make him an offer.
