WANDERERS boss John Gorman has handed Forest Green goal machine Charlie Griffin the chance to win a contract at Adams Park next season.

The non-league hotshot has been training with Wanderers this week as Gorman looks for extra firepower next season to turn his nearly-men into winners.

Gorman stepped up his striker hunt after seeing Wanderers' play-off hopes come to an end on Saturday when rivals Northampton and Darlington both picked up points.

But Gorman knows Wanderers' own hopes went down the pan before that with a catalogue of missed chances in the final few games and he won't tolerate a repeat next term.

The former England assistant manager has made it his number one priority to find someone to partner 22-goal hotshot Nathan Tyson next season and he is running the rule over Griffin to see if he can be the answer.

The 25-year-old Bath born striker has scored 17 goals for the relegated Conference outfit this term and is available on a free transfer after his contract at Forest Green ran out.

He chose to spend his week with Wycombe rather than go to Darlington.

His form in the Conference has impressed Gorman but the Wycombe chief now wants to see if he can carry that form onto the next stage.

Gorman caught a glimpse of Conference football on Monday, watching the play-off semi-final between Aldershot and Forest Green, and was not overly impressed by the standard and wanted to see Griffin close-up before making his decision.

Gorman said: "He's a rough diamond. To score the goals he has done in the Conference is a good achievement because it is not an easy league. His attitude is first class and he holds the ball up well."

Gorman could decide on Griffin next week but he stressed that even if he does bring him in, he will still look for another striker as well.

Griffin is not the only triallist under the microscope at the moment.

The manager has also been running the rule over a goalkeeper as well this week.

The mystery glovesman has League One experience and joined the Wanderers squad for training yesterday.

Gorman says he wants to bring four players in next season to complement his current squad and he warned his out-of-contract players that any unreasonable wage demands will be met with short shrift as he bids to improve his team.

He said: "If people are going to be awkward, they're going to be disappointed."

But the Blues chief revealed he plans to promote youth teamer Ikechi Anya to his squad. Gorman confirmed he will upgrade the youngster's youth scholar contract into a professional one. a year early.

Reserve team player Russell Martin will also be rewarded with a full pro contract replacing the rolling short term deal he has been on.

And the Wanderers boss warned supporters to be patient as he hunts the final pieces of his jigsaw.

He said: "I've got a list of players I want. But it's like house hunting. You are talking to agents all the time. You think you've got something sorted and then it goes wrong."
