WANDERERS are still without a league win under Tony Adams. Skipper Michael Simpson scored right on half time against his former club but it wasn't enough to secure all three points.
It seemed vital that Wycombe got the win away from home against fellow strugglers Notts County with the gap from safety fast widening, but Paul Heffernan's equaliser 15 minutes from time collapsed any hopes of the revival starting this afternoon. Both sides seemed to lack ideas and motivation early on and excluding the odd snatched effort, neither side had a sight at goal in the opening quarter of an hour.
Darren Currie, top scorer under the new boss, came close on 23 minutes with a clever lob that just floated over the bar and Jermaine McSporran tested Steve Midenhall in the County goal with a volley inside the box. Charlie Mapes, McSporran and loan signing Luke Moore all saw efforts saved or go wide after that as Wycombe really started to take control and this domination was finally rewarded right at the end of the first half. Wycombe aren't usually favoured by injury time goals but just before the break Simpson drilled the ball into the roof of the net from 25 yards to put the Chairboys one up. Simpson, recently back from injury struck it sweetly after Dannie Bulman's lay-off, a perfect way to end the half.
Wycombe didn't seem to gather the same momentum for the second period though, and the home side had by far the better chances throughout. Paul Bolland came close 10 minutes in, just dragging his effort wide of the post, and Darren Caskey also nearly equalised. Young keeper Steve Williams was kept very busy and produced a good stop against Ian Baraclough as well soon after. Notts thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Williams sent Heffernan flying in the box, but referee Trevor Parkes saw nothing wrong with the challenge and waved play on.
Williams was beaten soon after though; the goal that was beginning to seem inevitable came from Hefferman who converted from close range after a pass from Baraclough. Wycombe's earlier work was all undone once again as they failed to hold on.
The Blues tried to fight back and came close right at the death as Currie's corner prompted a goal-mouth scramble but eventually Roger Johnson's effort was cleared from danger.
Wycombe now desperately need a happy Christmas period if safety is to be a serious prospect.
