SATURDAY, May 28, 1994 will live long in the memory of all Wycombe Wanderers fans. It was the day when the club were last promoted.
Who could forget Dave Carroll’s wonder goal? Simon Garner’s equalising strike? Or the wonderful move for the third that summed up Martin O’Neill’s time of the club?
May 1994 was the month in which the Channel Tunnel opened. 1994 also saw the National Lottery introduced and shops allowed to open on a Sunday for the first time! John Major was still Prime Minister and I was just 10-years-old!
So it is no wonder why Wycombe fans are so excited about Saturday, May 2, 2009. 15 years is a long time without league success. But just one more point, just one will secure promotion for Buckinghamshire’s premier football clubs.
The odds are stacked in our favour. Notts County have lost their five games, they have failed to score in their last three and Wycombe are regarded as a bogey team for the League’s oldest club.
I’m sure Peter Taylor knows what he is doing. He has a near full strength side to choose from this game and it is difficult to see anyone not being totally up for this game.
You can only be 100 per cent optimistic that Wycombe will do it. Defeat really is unthinkable.
It should be a wonderful occasion. At the time of writing 7,000 tickets have been sold so just 3,000 short of a sell-out. It’s time for the people of Wycombe to really get behind one of the things that is truly iconic about this great town.
The club have also made the “away” end available to home fans at just a tenner a head. This is a great promotion and may mean the biggest home support ever seen at Adams Park.
So if you have not got your ticket, call up 01494 441118. We’ve waited 15 years for this. You would not want to miss out, would you?
• After four years on the Trust board I have decided not to stand for re-election at Thursday’s election. This is because due to logistical reasons, I will find it difficult to carry out my responsibilities fully. I will of course remain as a member and I am willing to help the Trust in anyway I can.
Ian Baker is on the Board of Wycombe Wanderers Trust. For further details about the Trust and how to join please see the new website at www.wycombewandererstrust.com.
