Wycombe Wanderers made it nine games unbeaten in the league as they defeated bottom-of-the-table Burton Albion 3-2 at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Chairboys started the game brightly, and deservingly took the lead after 16 minutes when Gideon Kodua scored his first goal the club.
An utterly outrageous reverse pass from Josh Scowen set the West Ham loanee free in the box, where he composed himself to fire past Harry Isted.
Luke Leahy had a great chance to make it 2-0 after Scowen was again involved, cutting the ball back across goal from a long ball, but, the Brewers defended stoutly, putting bodies on the line to keep the midfielder’s shot out.
Despite the pressure, Burton didn’t give up as they equalised on 20 minutes.
Daniel Harvie was caught out of position, which allowed Mason Bennett’s overhit cross was eventually met by Danilo Orsi who tapped-in from close-range.
Wycombe were glad to hear the whistle for half-time with the scores still level, as Burton looked to have the Chairboys on the ropes.
Once again, it was an electric start to the second half for the Blues as they regained the lead early on.
Former Brewer Bez Lubala cut inside and smashed a shot off the far post, which allowed Luke Leahy to react the quickest, as he steered the ball past Isted to make it 2-1.
Wanderers were in control but from the blue, Burton equalised again through Charlie Webster, who scored from range.
There was nothing Franco Ravizzoli could’ve done about it but questions had to be asked, as Wycombe really should’ve put the game to bed.
Matt Bloomfield responded to the equaliser by bringing on Garath McCleary, Fred Onyedinma and Dan Udoh for goalscorer Kodua, ex-Brewer Lubala, and Richard Kone.
And the subs worked was Udoh scored Wanderers’ winner in the final 10 minutes.
A quick break from McCleary was played into Scowen, and another sumptuous through ball found Onyedinma at the byline who cut the ball back for Udoh, who couldn’t miss.
Wycombe had the lead for the third time with nine minutes to play.
A frantic end which saw goalkeeper Isted sent up to try and get on the corner was survived, as Wycombe took the three points back to Buckinghamshire.
The Chairboys remain third in League One, breathing down Wrexham’s neck with a game in hand.
Bloomfield’s men are now unbeaten in their last nine matches in the league, whilst Burton remain winless and bottom of the third tier.
Man of the match: Josh Scowen
Scowen was instrumental in Wycombe’s play on Tuesday evening.
His beautiful passes helped craft the first and third goals which ultimately earned the Chairboys three important points on the road.
