Former Wycombe Wanderers manager Martin O’Neill has reflected on his time managing the club, describing his time in south Buckinghamshire as ‘terrific days’.

During his five years with the Chairboys, he won two FA Trophy finals in 1991 and 1993, the Conference title in 1993, promotion to Division Two [League One], in 1994 along with the Conference League Cup in 1992.

He also helped Wycombe win three Conference Shields in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

He said: “I was the last manager at Loakes Park, the first at Adams Park, and we had a team that was so, so strong.

“They were terrific days as the players gave everything.

“We got to Wembley, we won cups, we won promotion to the Football League before earning another promotion.

“When I saw that Wycombe got Sutton in the League Cup, I immediately thought back to the FA Trophy match and I tell you what, it was fantastic.

“We were going to win promotion to the Football League, and I was desperate to win a cup double so it was sensational.

“If it wasn’t for the players, I wouldn’t have had a managerial career.”

He shared his love for the club in the same week he was announced as the new Honorary President of Wycombe Wanderers Foundation.

The announcement was made during half-time in the Chairboys’ 3-2 win over Leyton Orient at Adams Park.

He continued: “I’m very proud to have been asked and naturally I accepted.

“The foundation is part of the football club and it wasn’t there when I was here, but it’s so important to have.

“It’s a big deal as it helps the community and I’ll help in any way that I can as this is where it started for me.”
