Wycombe Wanderers’ ended their 2022/23 home campaign with a whimper as they fell to a 3-0 defeat to mid-table Cheltenham Town.
In a flat first-half that saw minimal chances, it was Wycombe that had the opening attempts through Dom Gape and Sam Vokes.
The midfielder, who was making his first league start since October, saw his fierce shot get deflected over the crossbar, before a header from Wanderers’ number nine went wide.
This was as good as it got for the Chairboys in the opening half as Cheltenham began to take control.
Alfie May, who had scored five times in his last two games versus the Chairboys, went around league debutant Harvey Cartwright, not once, but twice as his shot was blocked off the line.
He then tried his luck once more moments later but was again thwarted by some heroic defending from Ryan Tafazolli and Chris Forino.
But on 37 minutes, the visitors got their goal through an Aidan Keena penalty.
The forward was tripped by Gape in the box, and scored his fourth goal in 19 matches since joining Cheltenham from Sligo Rovers in January.
The 24-year-old nearly got his second on the stroke of half-time, but his bending effort from 18-yards was tipped away by Cartwright.
Wanderers started the second period with more aggression as Ryan Tafazolli’s header went wide, whilst Garath McCleary’s shot was brilliantly blocked.
Chem Campbell also had a header miss the target inside the six-yard box, but it was the visitors that got the second goal of the contest through May.
His first-time strike from 14-yards flew beyond Cartwright via a deflection, as he celebrated his 21st of the season, and his sixth in three games against the Chairboys.
The game was wrapped up in the final few moments as an error from Cartwright allowed Keena to get his second of the content.
The result means this is the first time Cheltenham have completed the double over Wycombe, with the victory being their first at Adams Park since November 2013.
For Wanderers, this means they have ended the season by not winning any of their last nine games played on a Saturday afternoon.
Up next for the Chairboys is Portsmouth away on the final day of the season.
