England brought the game back when Harry Kane scored a penalty in the second half.
However, Harry Kane missed a second penalty near the end of the match, securing the French a victory.
Heartbroken. We so desperately wanted this time to be our time, but it wasn’t meant to be.

This means England is no longer in the tournament and that France will go on to play Morroco next week.
Morroco reached the semi-finals in a major World Cup upset after the North African team beat Portugal 1-0.
Whoever wins between the two will play either Croatia or Argentina in the long-anticipated final in Qatar.
France won the last World Cup when it took place in Russia in 2018 and is now one step closer to this year's final.

Harry Kane took to Instagram to express a heartfelt message to England fans after his team was knocked out of the tournament by France.
On the popular social media platform, he said: "Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.
"Now it’s about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament - it means a lot."

England midfielder, Jordan Henderson praised the team's captain despite Kane missing the second penalty, telling ITV: "We know how many penalties Harry has scored, how many goals he has contributed for us to get us here. He scored the first one.
“He will be stronger for it in the long run, I’m sure. He’s a world-class striker, our captain, and we wouldn’t be here without him.”
England manager, Southgate commented on the result when asked if the team deserved more, saying: “I think the performance did but in the end goals are decisive.
“I don’t think they could have given any more. They have played really well against a top team.”
