WASPS' Guinness Premiership match away at Newcastle Falcons tonight has been called off for safety reasons.

The match was called off less than 90 minutes before kick off due to gale force winds.

One of the posts snapped in a violent gust and the match was postponed at 6.35pm with the weather expected to get worse.

Winds were exceding 65 miles per hour when the decision was taken and with gusts of more than 80 mph expected officials say they had no choice.

No new date has been arranged yet.

No one from Wasps was available for comment. They headed homewards as soon as the decision was taken.

It is the second time in recent weeks, Wasps have been beaten by the weather.

Their home match against Sale was called off just 15 minutes before the kick off because of a frozen pitch at Adams Park and they now face a fixture backlog.
