Wycombe Wanderers fell to a late defeat to Shrewsbury Town last weekend as a late penalty saw the Chairboys lose their first-ever home league game to the visitors in what has been a shaky start to the season.

The hosts, however, created many chances throughout the game and looked far and away the better outfit.

Both Salop's goals came against the run of play as the visitors buried the chances they got.

Home fans watching on saw Wycombe fire 18 shots at the keeper, nine of which were on target.

Given the sheer domination, the hosts had of Shrewsbury's goal mouth many questioned if such an occurrence had happened before.

Late last season was the last time the Chairboys managed to replicate similar results. 18 shots in a 4-1 away win at Cambridge United saw the same goal effort with a very different outcome.

The 1-1 draw against Lincoln City was the last time Wycombe failed to win a game having 18 shots or more, over 21 matches ago.

However, for a defeat, you have to go back even further to the 1-0 away defeat to Portsmouth where the visitors had 21 attempts on goal.

Similar circumstances were involved in the game with Joe Jacobson having a penalty saved instead of conceding one.

Comparing the shots on target is an even more impressive feat.

The last time the Chairboys hit that number was in the same fixture last season in a 0-0 draw as 26 attempts were also seen that game but there was clearly no way through the Salop backline.

To find the last time a defeat occurred you would have to travel back to the 2019/20 season when the Chairboys were knocked out of the FA Cup by Tranmere.

Fans at Adams Park witnessed 10 attempts on target from the home side, but the Super Whites got a late winner in extra time.

Many now may look at the recent defeat to Shrewsbury as nothing more than an anomaly.

If the side continues to replicate the sheer number of opportunities they are producing they shall certainly win far more than they will lose.

All that is missing is a clinical finish to put the game to bed.
