SCOTT McGleish became only the third man to score 20 Football League goals in a season for Wanderers when he converted a first half penalty in the midweek 2-2 draw at Bury.
The 34-year-old who joined the club for £75,000 from Northampton last season has raced to the total in just 32 matches.
He has 14 matches left to beat the 22 scored by Nathan Tyson in the 2004/05 season or the 23 notched by Sean Devine in the 1999/2000 campaign.
He has scored almost half of Wycombe's 41 goals in the league this season and without his input Wanderers would be residing in 18th position in League Two instead of battling it out in the play-off positions.
Boss Paul Lambert has now challenged him to finish the season as the club's all-time record league goalscorer.
He said: "He's been unbelievable value for £75,000 and he can finish the season as the top goalscorer in this league."
