Joining from July 1, he will add experience to the ranks at Hillsborough as they look to return to the second tier.
With more than 400 career appearances to date, and an England international call-up a decade ago, he has played in all four professional English divisions.
Breaking the news this afternoon, the club said: "We wish him well for the future at his new club, where he will be closer to home and able to enjoy more time with his family."
