Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has promised supporters that he will achieve Championship football for the club regardless of how long it will take him.

The 48-year-old succeeded in his quest two years ago when the Chairboys defeated Oxford United in the League One play-off final.

However, the following season saw the club play behind closed doors due to coronavirus pandemic, meaning that only three of their 46 league games were witnessed by live spectators.

Those matches were against Stoke City and Coventry City at home, and AFC Bournemouth away respectively.

This season however has seen supporters return to stadiums, with the club currently boasting one of their best-performing campaigns in recent years.

If they were to reach 83 points, which is the most the Chairboys can accumulate this season, it will be their highest tally since 2018 when they picked up 84 in their promotion-winning season to League One.

The boss said: “It was a real shame that they weren’t allowed in last year to see their team in the Championship as it would have been fantastic.

“And I’m going to deliver that for them.

“Whether it’s this season, next season, or whenever I will deliver Championship football for this club.

"I want to make sure that they have a chance to support their team in the Championship.

“They’ve been supporting this team this season up and down the country and on the other day at Wimbledon, they were great as there were so many of them.

“Let’s get together.”

The match against Sheffield Wednesday could also see the club achieve their highest home crowd of the campaign, as tickets continue to be purchased.

Currently, the club have only hit the 8,000 mark twice this season, but they have come in wins against fellow promotion rivals Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle.

Both coincidentally were 2-0 victories for the Chairboys.

The club have easily hit 6,000 and 7,000 fans throughout, but with the final home match of the regular league season being against a side that are also fighting for promotion, it could be a busy day at Adams Park.

Ainsworth continued: “We’re right up there and that’s a credit to the boys, to the staff, and everyone who works within the club.

"They have helped me put on a great platform so that I can pick the team to win games.

“We know what is at stake and we want to give the fans what they want and deserve."
