Wycombe Wanderers have paid tribute to their former player, Paul McCarthy, who died five years ago last week.

The popular defender, who spent seven seasons with the Chairboys between 1996 and 2003, suddenly passed away at the age of 45 on February 19, 2017, of a suspected heart attack.

In memory of the Irishman, who was part of the club’s historical FA Cup run in 2001, Wycombe have displayed his match-worn shirt from the semi-final defeat to Liverpool in the Adams Park reception area.

It was on show for Wycombe’s recent 5-5 draw against Cheltenham and their 3-1 home defeat against Wigan.

In a tweet that was published a day before the fifth anniversary, Wycombe said: “Saturday marks the fifth anniversary of the sad death of #Chairboys legend Paul McCarthy at the age of just 45.

“With Macca in the team, we went beyond our wildest dreams. His shirt from the FA Cup semi-final is on display in reception at Adams Park.”

McCarthy played 259 games for the club, scoring 19 goals.
