Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth hopes to make Adams Park into a ‘fortress’, after Wanderers defeated Gillingham 2-0 in south Bucks.

Goals from Garath McCleary and Brandon Hanlan inside the first seven minutes sealed all three points for the Chairboys, after the Gills missed a penalty and failed to really test David Stockdale in the Wycombe goal.

The victory means Wycombe have now won their last seven home league games, which includes the first five of this season.

Speaking after the victory, Ainsworth said: “We really feel that we have got this home advantage at times.

“We use this place as a fortress and of course, teams get beat at home but you look at the top teams with these records of not being beaten at home for two or three years like your Liverpools, Man Citys, Man Uniteds and I think that is key to success in a team.

“Being at home is so important to these boys as they feel, especially this season, they can achieve at home, and we to make Adams Park a difficult place to go to.

“I would back us against anyone at home and I am looking forward to the next few games.”

The victory puts Wanderers into the top two of the League One table as they continue to march towards a place in the Championship.

And with three of the next four matches all being away from home against sides in the north of the country, the back end of October could be a testing time for Wanderers.

But following the strong performances of Sam Vokes, Brandon Hanlan and Garath McCleary in the win over Steve Evans’ men, Ainsworth believes his side can beat anyone on their day.

He continued: “Sam Vokes is a fantastic signing but so is Brandon Hanlan.

"Adebayo Akinfenwa has been great for us but he cannot go on forever, and as much as I think he fights with it, Bayo knows he is coming to that age now, so Brandon came in as a ‘what if’, if Sam Vokes or Garath McCleary were not available.

“We need that depth within the squad, but I also do the depth without signing 30 players, as I’ll make it worth with 16 or 17.

“I have always loved it and I have learned a lot from when we can only do that.

“We have got development players who get minutes in when they can but I have got a core group of 17 players and I am really blown away with the depth we’ve got.

“Nick Freeman is going to be out long term, but we have got the rest and there is a real chance of achieving something.”
