Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has revealed why several of his first teamers played in their 2-1 away loss at MK Dons on Tuesday night.

The defeat means that Wanderers have been knocked out of the EFL Trophy for another season, meaning their fixture against Burton Albion in a few weeks time will be a dead rubber.

In the loss in North Bucks on October 5, defenders in Jason McCarthy, Joe Jacobson, Jack Grimmer and Jordan Obita all started the match, with Ryan Tafazolli and Anthony Stewart being unused substitutes.

And the manager explained the reasons for this.

He said: “We have got no other players who can play in defence.

I’ve got Ryan Tafazolli and Anthony Stewart and I think eyebrows would have been raised if they started as well.

“With Chris Forino, Max Ram, Jack Wakley, Andre Burley and James Clark from the development squad all out injured, I was forced my hand to play some of the players we did, but JJ, he is going to be a legend at this club, led the team alongside Jason, Jack and Jordan and I thought they did really well.”
