Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth believes his side could be a ‘yoyoing Championship club’, after they defeated promotion-pushing Bournemouth 1-0 at Adams Park.
Uche Ikpeazu’s stunning first-half strike sealed Wanderers’ 10th league win of the campaign, but the Chairboys still remain in the bottom three.
They now move onto 40 points – joint with Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday, who both managed draws on the same day as Wycombe’s victory.
Wycombe’s only chance of staying in the second-tier of English football is if the two teams mentioned above, as well as Derby County, all drop points on the final day, whilst having at least a 10 goal swing go in their favour.
This will be tricky as Sheffield Wednesday take on Derby on the final day.
Speaking after the 1-0 win over the ex-Premier League side, Ainsworth said: “This club has got to 40 points, and there has been no ‘r’ next to our name throughout our Championship season.
“It will be until the final whistle on the final day for Wycombe Wanderers to be relegated if that happens and I couldn’t be prouder of that stat.
“It’s phenomenal.
“I bet we were the favourites to be the first ones to go down, and I am so proud to have upset the odds once again.
“The boys deserved the win.

“The goal was fantastic, the defensive display was brilliant and the work rate was phenomenal.
“This excites me for next year – never mind next week.
“With Rob and Pete Couhig in charge, we have the backing and structure of this place to become, and I can't believe I'm saying this, a yoyoing Championship club.
“That is something I thought I would never say at Wycombe Wanderers when a few years ago, we were looking at the trapdoor into the Non League, so what an achievement that is.”
Despite being in a relegation battle, Wanderers were the better side at Adams Park and could have been out of sight if it wasn’t for a top-class save from Begovic to deny Garath McCleary, moments after Ikpeazu’s stunner, and if Anthony Stewart’s header wasn’t blocked on the line.
It was a spirited display, which means they still have a mathematical chance of survival when they travel to the Riverside Stadium on May 8.
And with the final game being two days before Ainsworth’s 48th birthday, he insists he would be a ‘ridiculous’ present.
He said: “If we survive, it’ll be all my birthdays at once – it’ll be ridiculous.
“A win is the first ask and we’ll just see after that.
“You never know in football but it is all tall order.”
The match will kick-off at 12.30pm.
