Wanderers’ 3-0 win over Rotherham was their first victory by more than one goal at Championship level and gives the squad a massive boost in the unlikely fight for survival.

Added to the narrow win against Blackburn on Good Friday, Wycombe are in a much better place than they were even a week ago but probably still need at least 14 points from their last six games.

The successful trip to Yorkshire was a superb display of defensive solidity, with David Stockdale denying the hosts on several occasions along with help from the players in front of him.

A lot of talk has been about the Chairboys’ change in formation since the international break, but that didn’t really have a part to play at Rotherham.

The aforementioned determined defence combined with three long kicks from your ‘keeper being flicked on and finished expertly is a near-perfect performance whatever system you’re playing.

Although the six points over Easter were brilliant and much-needed, results elsewhere were far from ideal, with Coventry, Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday all winning.

Wanderers will need to overtake one of the two west Midlands clubs to have a chance of staying up, but the Sky Blues halted a run of drab displays on Monday and were very solid in victory over Bristol City.

Birmingham beat an out of sorts Swansea side, who now look like they could drop out of the play-offs after being in the top two not so long ago.

That’s good news for Wycombe, who play the Swans in a couple of weeks, but they’re going to have to hope the sides above the dotted line don’t put in too many more performances like they did over the weekend.

Either way, survival has always been quite a distant proposition for most Chairboys fans, and the team will fancy their chances of at least getting a couple more wins and finishing off the bottom.

That would still be a notable achievement given the number of onlookers that tipped Gareth Ainsworth’s side to be one of the worst teams in the history of the Championship.

The visit of Luton to Adams Park on Saturday is another opportunity to close the gap to safety.

Nathan Jones has done a superb job since returning to Bedfordshire, but his team have lost their last two, and may be vulnerable to a confident Wanderers side at the weekend.

The worry is that teams higher up the division will do what Rotherham didn’t and put away their chances, and if a few of them do so and get the better of Wanderers, it’ll be League One football next season guaranteed.
