Wycombe right-back Jason McCarthy believes ‘momentum is a really powerful thing’, after Wanderers defeated Preston 1-0 at Adams Park on March 13.
Ryan Tafazolli scored the winner with McCarthy, who is now in his fourth spell with the club, putting in a fine performance to help the Chairboys secure only their sixth league win of the season.
The 25-year-old started the match in his favourable position, before seeing out the game in the midfield as the Wanderers shut out Preston in the final few stages.
It was an all-important win for the homeside, who stay bottom of the Championship, but are now only nine points away from safety with 10 games to go.

Speaking after the victory, he said: “We feel great but we’re not [feeling] too high as we’re still in that position in the league and we want to try and catch Sheffield Wednesday, as they are the immediate target.
“It’s a great feeling and it’s great getting a clean sheet but we’re looking forward to Wednesday.

“It’s a quick turnaround as the schedule is so intense so we’re looking forward to then.
“Momentum is a really powerful thing and we’ve got to gather that now as we go into the run-in.”

PNE were non-existent in the fist-half as Wycombe dominated the ball and could have been out of sight by half-time with Tafazolli, Ikpeazu and Mehmeti all having chances.
However, Alex Neil’s men slowly got their play together in the second period, with McCarthy needing to be on call to head the ball away from several dangerous crosses.
He continued: “They did test us at a lot of points during the second half, but, I thought we stood firm and when they were chucking the ball into the box, I was feeling confident that we were going to see it out and fortunately we did.”
Finally, McCarthy will be up against his former side on Wednesday night as Barnsley travel to Adams Park.
He spent one season at Oakwell in 2017/18, where he played 24 matches for the Tykes.
McCarthy said: “Against Barnsley, we have got to play with that same intensity as we did today [against Preston], and even the game against QPR, and just take that confidence from the win today [against Preston].”
