Following Wycombe’s 1-0 win over Preston, Gareth Ainsworth has provided an injury update on Jordan Obita.
The left-back, who joined Wycombe during the January Transfer Window this year, went off injured in the 2-0 home defeat against Norwich City on February 28.
He has since missed Wanderers’ last four matches, which includes the 1-0 win over Preston North End on March 13.
Since joining, Obita has played eight times for the Chairboys, starting seven of those games.
Speaking after the win over PNE, Ainsworth said: “Jordan Obita has had a scan on his ankle and we’re thankful that it is not as bad as first thought.
“I think he can play some part to the end of the season which would be fantastic, but Joe Jacobson is more than a great deputy.
“I feel bad calling him a deputy, but he has come in following Jordan’s injury and wow, I have got some selection headaches with Jacobson and Obita and McCarthy and Grimmer in the full-back roles which is brilliant.
“Jordan will miss a few weeks, but, he was in the dressing room after the game today [Saturday] and he was elated as he wants us to stay in this league and so do we.”
The manager also believes that if he had Uche Ikpeazu and Ryan Tafazolli fit at the start of the season, Wycombe’s inaugural campaign as a Championship outfit might have gone differently.
The two missed large chunks at the start of the season with injuries before finally getting a run of games in the starting 11 at the end of 2020.
The two are now important figures in Wycombe’s quest to stay in the Championship, as the duo have started 12 of the last 17 matches in all competitions, since the 2-1 win over Cardiff on December 29, 2020.
Ainsworth added: “Tafazolli was out for three months as he did his ankle ligaments in quite a bad way in the second home match of the season against Swansea.
“[We also missed] Uche Ikpeazu as well.
“Both of them were out for months and they were my star summer signings.
“People don’t realise that.
“They just look go, ‘look at Wycombe, they should be bottom of the league’ but I think, if we had a full squad, we would be five, six, seven points higher than what we’re on right now, which would be a real ‘game on’ situation [to avoid relegation].
“For me, it is still ‘game on’ and with Tafazolli, it was a great performance from him [against Preston], but he will be the first to thank everyone around him."
Since joining the club last summer, Ikpeazu and Tafazolli have played a combined total of 37 matches for Wycombe, have scored five goals and have kept five clean sheets so far this season.
