Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is ‘proud’ of his team after the Chairboys came back from 2-0 down to beat Huddersfield 3-2.

Juninho Bacuna and Isaac Mbenza gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead in the first-half but on the stroke of half-time, Anis Mehmeti scored only his second-ever goal as a professional to give Wanderers hope.

This started a Wycombe revival as midway through the second-half, Joe Jacobson equalised from the penalty spot before Josh Knight, who started in the midfield for Wanderers, got the winner with three minutes remaining to complete a stunning come back.

It was Knight’s second goal of the season, but his first in the Championship.

Wycombe still remain bottom of England’s second-tier, but are now only 10 points away from safety.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara after the match at the John Smith’s Stadium, Ainsworth said: “I’m so proud of the boys.

"I told the boys to be brave, press high and battle.

"They did it and we deserved the win and Anis is going to be some player.

"He gave us hope and momentum with that goal.

“The boys believe we can stay up.

"We had a team-building exercise last night and it was really positive.

“Alex Samuel told these boys we can write our own story, our own history this season.

“And they know they can do it.”

It was only Wycombe’s fifth win of the season and with their fourth in Championship, which ended a torrid league run of five games without a victory.

It was also Wanderers’ first victory over Huddersfield since the 1994/95 season, when the Chairboys completed the double over the Yorkshire-side.

Up next for Wycombe is a home fixture against Wayne Rooney’s Derby County on Tuesday, February 20.

Derby currently occupy the Championship relegation places alongside Wycombe and Birmingham City.
