Wycombe captain Matt Bloomfield has heaped praise on his manager Gareth Ainsworth and believes he is one of the ‘greatest’ in the club’s history.

Ainsworth took charge of his 400th game as Wycombe manager against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, with the Chairboys defeating the Pirates 3-1.

Bloomfield and Ainsworth were roommates when the latter joined the club as a player in 2009, and he hopes the 46-year-old will stay at Wycombe for the foreseeable future.

The skipper said: “I want the gaffer to stay here for a very long time.

“Seven years he’s been here as a manger and 10 years overall and the job he’s done can’t be underestimated.

“Along with Martin O’Neill, I would suggest he is our greatest manger.

“Those two go up there as the greatest managers in Wycombe Wanderers' history.

“The job he’s done is incredible.

“We were the underdogs in League Two and he got us out of there, we were the underdogs in League One when we survived, we are the underdogs again [at the moment] and I don’t think you can underestimate the job he’s done.

“We were roommates for a couple years and he’s always had that energy and that enthusiasm about us.

“He was always the one that had the music on before the game and I think his music rubbed off on me a little bit, so he was always the one up ready for the games.

“I sort of fed off that and he’s the same as a manager.

“He’s and incredible man.

“His man management is huge and I think as you see the boys will run through brick walls for him.

"That’s how he leads us and I'd like to think I'd try to be on his coattails and help him in the way I captain this club.”
