Six weeks ago, Wycombe were sitting on top of the League One table after a 2-0 victory over Burton Albion.

The victory meant that Wycombe were top on Christmas Day in the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

Fast forward to now, the Chairboys have dropped to third having won one of their last seven matches and have conceded 17 goals in that time.

But despite their recent drop in form, this evening’s match against Blackpool could be the perfect pathway for the Chairboys to get their promotion-pushing season back on track.

Yes, the 4-0 hammering against Peterborough on January 21 would have knocked the wind out of Gareth Ainsworth’s men following on from the dramatic 2-1 victory against Rochdale three days previously, but there is an incentive to really get the three points today.

What’s the incentive? First-place Ipswich take on second-place Rotherham this evening.

Ipswich are on 48 points and Rotherham are on 47, level with Wycombe.

Any slip up from either Ipswich or Rotherham along with a victory for Wycombe, will see the Chairboys go back into the top two.

But Wycombe don’t have the best of records against Blackpool.

In the 24 meetings between Wycombe and Blackpool, Wycombe have only won five times and are currently winless in their last 13 matches against Simon Grayson’s men.

In fact, the last time Wycombe defeated Blackpool was way back in September 1999 when the Chairboys left Bloomfield Road with a 2-1 victory.

The last time Wycombe beat Blackpool at Adams Park was in January 1998.

However, that was then and this is now and despite the slump in form recently, there is a real buzz around Adams Park which resembles what the club went through during their promotion season of two years ago.

Gareth Ainsworth has got a feel-good factor going around the club and with Jason McCarthy and David Stockdale back at Wycombe on loan deals until the end of the season, it gives fans real hope that promotion to the Championship is a realistic possibility.

And with a Buckinghamshire derby on Saturday at MK Dons, a victory will be the perfect confidence boost for the players, after two heavy defeats to Sunderland and Peterborough.

My prediction? I’m going for a 3-1 Wycombe win.
