Three Buckinghamshire schools, including St Mary’s and Gateway, triumphed at the ISA Girls Football Festival last week, and collected their prizes from Arsenal’s USA World Cup winning player Heather O’Reilly at LVS Ascot school in Berkshire.
Gateway’s under 11 team showed great promise in reaching their final only to lose to hosts LVS Ascot in the Plate event and St Mary’s from Gerrards Cross finished runners up to Southbank Kensington in the Cup competition.
With nine pitches in operation at any one time, independent all-ability school LVS Ascot’s 25-acre site was a sea of colour as girls in three age categories – under 11, under 13 and under 15 – battled it out in mini-leagues and then knockout competition.
O’Reilly said: “It is exciting for me to be at an event like this to see how much the sport has grown over here, and learning so many qualities through football.”
