Injury doubts over several players and a suspension to key defender Aaron Pierre have handed Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth a selection headache ahead of tomorrow’s game against Morecambe.
Question marks hang over the fitness of Joe Jacobson, Matt McClure, Aaron Holloway, Nico Yennaris and Sam Saunders, while Matt Bloomfield confirmed to the Free Press that he is “raring to go” for the visit of the Shrimps.
Ainsworth was tight lipped on who he expected to have available for selection for the final home game of the season, instead naming Sido Jombati as the only confirmed absentee along with Pierre, who serves a one match ban after being sent-off towards the end of Saturday’s 0-0 draw with AFC Wimbledon.
“We’ve obviously had to watch one or two players and make sure they’re flying for Saturday. There’s a big injury list, there’s a few close and we’ll see where we are for Saturday,” said the Wycombe boss.
“Sido’s definitely out and apart from him everyone’s got a chance. Some have got a small chance and some have got a big chance. Without going through it all and giving anything away, team-wise, that’s about all I can say.”
The 41-year-old also said he would put himself on the bench only in an “emergency” if players do not recover in time.
Holloway and McClure picked up muscle injuries against Exeter and sat out the draw with the Dons, while Yennaris and Saunders were forced off with injuries in south London along with Bloomfield.
The defence also poses problems for the Blues boss who said after Saturday’s match that Peter Murphy and Tommy Fletcher are two people who could fill the void in central defence. He said: “I’ve been looking at people in training, speaking to the boys and trying to do the best we can. It’s going to be tough to replace Aaron and we’ll have to come up with some plan and hopefully we can get the three points.
“We’ve got to get out there, dig deep and win a game. We’ve played players out of position this season anyway and Saturday will be no different.”
