GARETH Ainsworth said he expects to run the rule over five or six trialists in pre-season - but has denied Twitter speculation one of them is former Chelsea youngster Nortei Nortey.

The 18-year-old this week tweeted a picture of a training session with Wanderers defender Aaron Pierre, leading to fans speculating he would be the latest new arrival at Adams Park.

But Ainsworth said those supporters are wide of the mark, insisting there's no deal on the table for Nortey.

The Blues boss said: "He's friends with a couple of our players and that's about as far as we've got on that.

"Twitter can be the bane of my life. If we signed every player we were linked with on Twitter we'd have a huge squad next season.

"Rumours come and go. We've been linked with so many players it's crazy, but I know the truth and that's all that matters."

Nortey was highly regarded at Chelsea but three serious knee injuries knocked back his progress and he was released, joining Maidenhead United in February.

Ainsworth did admit however he would be inviting some players currently without a club to join in with Blues' pre-season regime, which starts this week, with a view to possibly adding to his squad.

He said: "It wouldn't be pre-season without trialists. I think we've got five or six coming in and we'll have a look. There's always a rough diamond or a surprise package somewhere so I think we'd be stupid not to look into that.

"Everyone will be fighting to get back in. The aspirations and expectations some players had at the start of the summer, they are getting a reality check now and realising it's tough to stay in football.

"Trialists are very important and there could be chance for one or two of them if they shine in pre-season."

Ainsworth said most of his transfer business has already been concluded for the summer after making four signings, preferring to go for quality over quantity after using 30 players last campaign.

He said: "There could be a couple of surprises late in pre-season. Barring one or two, the majority will be here on day one ready to go.

"I need players who've got experience who are going to come in and play and I think so far we've shown with our signings what we are trying to achieve this season. There are some really good names in there who've got League One and League Two experience.

"I want players who aspire to play at the higher levels.

"We are more or less done with signings. We're a very small squad this year because of the budget but we've gone for quality and maybe taken a few more risks - hopefully they will all pay off for me.

"I'm very excited about the quality I'm bringing in, and about the boys' character and attitude towards playing for me."
