WILL Helu could well make hay while the sun’s not shining.
This winter the Tongan international will have an opportunity to nail down a place in the Wasps side as injuries across the back line have seen him rushed to the front line.
Four tries in his first three games has been his response, but he admits it’s all happened faster than expected.
He said: “Before I signed I knew who was here and knew there would be huge competition.
“I knew I’d have my hands full.
“The injuries are obviously a huge blow for the team, but it has given me an opportunity to put my hand up and show what I can do.
“I’ve been coming back from my own injury and it takes time to get back to your full potential.
“There is still a lot to improve on and it’s a slow process, but every time I play I want to be better than my last game.”
Tom Varndell’s return from an arm injury is imminent, but Christian Wade and Andrea Masi are both long-term absentees and the wing-cum-centre could find himself in a battle with Josh Bassett for the number 14 shirt.
He said: “I don’t mind where I play, I’m just happy to be out there regardless of what position I’m in.”
Helu’s tries have all come in Europe, and he is likely to get another run out in the Amlin Challenge Cup on Sunday, when Wasps host Grenoble aiming to build on last week’s 47-7 win in France.
He said: “It would be my first run out at Adams Park. It’s a good ground to be watching but hopefully it would be even better to run out there.
“We were expecting a tough game last week and we definitely got that.
“The boys’ attitude was spot on, but we can’t get complacent now.”
