MEASURING the performance of our ambulance service through statistics will always be problematic – with much of the excellent work by paramedics and support staff ignored by the headline results.

South Central Ambulance Service has urged caution over the figures and it is crucial that indicators such as these are measured consistently across different ambulance trusts and hospitals.

It could also be unfair to compare our region with London – which is obviously an urban area where patients are usually easier to get to quickly.

We suggest the personal stories should also form part of any judgement on performance – such as that of Kieran Reddington – whose life was saved by a South Central ambulance crew.
