A solution to the problem of prepayment meters
I AND I expect most other people find the forcible conversion by domestic power providers to pre-paid metered supply of household energy abhorrent.
Would it not be a lot simpler if all domestic users were given free energy/power up to a basic level of consumption.
Be that weekly, monthly or quarterly. The cost of this spread over energy supplied above that threshold in say one or two tiers depending on level of use.
At a stroke low-income families would have security in the knowledge that provision of a basic supply could not be withdrawn.
The cost of this, spread over the rest of the nation’s domestic energy users, would be so small as to be unnoticeable.
The existing payment system would be unchanged, pre-paid meter users would have a weekly top-up on their “card” and could, if wanted purchase further units over and above that level.
