MASSIVE traffic tailbacks hit the M40 this morning after a woman plunged from a bridge onto the carriageway and died.

Emergency services were called around 6.40am by members of the public to the scene between junctions four for High Wycombe and junction five for Stokenchurch towards London. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

All three lanes were closed by police as they investigated the incident however two lanes have since been reopened and traffic is beginning to flow.

The inside lane is set to remain closed for the "forseeable future", police say.

Seargent Steve Underwood, of Amersham police, said: "A number of witnesses have come forward, however I would urge anyone who has any information or who was driving along this stretch of motorway at the time to contact me so we can piece together exactly what has happened."

Anyone with information should contact police on 08458 505 505.
