Today in 2012 I’m no longer sure to why we would need Members of Parliament to represent us in our towns/area’s.

I can understand the logic that in ye olde days the local baron would be born into his parliamentary seat usually hereditary and go into public service for the good of the area and to make his mark, etc

But we live in the 21st century and it is possible for the majority of us to connect and to vote on issues ourselves.

As a very crude example:

Do you want the UK to continue to be a member of the European Union (yes or no)

Would you like to bring back corporal punishment to those convicted of killing children (yes or no)

Are you in favour of invading Iraq (yes or no)

Etc, etc, etc

Because at the moment I very much get the impression that MP’s are told what to vote for (i.e. depending on party lines, 3 line whips, etc), that the European Union dictates many of our laws or that our local MP doesn’t hold the same views as the people do (i.e. the voters).

Also that big business, city bankers pay for lobbyists to work on their behalf and play the game that ensures that their best interests are looked after.

Where do we fit into all of this? We are the real money men/financiers who pay our taxes.

Why can we not hold the right to vote directly on issues?

The houses of parliament do great work and I have no problem with the House of Lords (apart from it should be elected rather than places given by the government of the day) but I see that the House of Commons no longer represents us, especially when numbers of political parties are falling and we no longer connect with politicians and would rather no bother to vote at all for this out of date system.

Why can we not hold the real power, in the try means of the work “democracy”. We pay the many taxes that in the olden days used to finance the King of the day’s latest hunting trip or war.

We have this amazing invention called the Internet and the Computer, whereby we would have the means to connect into a collective system that would be used to provide us with information and the means to answer questions in the same way that current MP’s have but instead of them voting (depending on which way that they want to be promoted or demoted) that we do it on our own behalf.

Thoughts? Good idea or not?
