SUPERMARKET chain Sainsbury’s looks set to move into Gerrards Cross with the blessing of local traders.

Fisher’s, which has been in Packhorse Road since 1969, has approached Sainsbury’s about taking over two-thirds of its site - with the family-run store planning to downsize to a butcher and delicatessen (see related links).

Rival chains Tesco and Waitrose have already moved into the village in recent years.

Anne Scott, of Auberge du Chocolat, which is next door to Fisher’s, said: "I’m delighted that Fisher’s get to stay in some way, and this will hopefully mean more business in the area."

Mats Lindvall, of Matt la Moda, said: "If this partnership with Sainsbury’s is what is needed for them to maintain their presence, then I fully support the plans."

Dani Barrie, of Neville Johnson Interiors, said it was a difficult time for local businesses and the deal "shows that something can be done to keep independent traders in their local communities".

Meanwhile, Martin Vassey, of Business Doctors Thames Valley, which is based in Chalfont St Giles, believes Sainsbury’s arrival would "maintain employment, increase competition, and improve footfall in the Gerrards Cross area".
