BROADCASTING legend Sir Terry Wogan is to pick up an honorary degree from Buckinghamshire New University next month.

The much-loved presenter will receive an honorary doctorate on the afternoon of Wednesday September 5 in recognition of his highly successful radio and television career.

He will join 1,500 students and other honorary graduands at the University's graduation ceremonies at Wycombe Swan Theatre, High Wycombe.

Other honorary awardees to be recognised in this year’s ceremony include top UK film producer Nik Powell, former Thames Valley Police Chief Superintendent Paul Tinnion, and one of the UK’s top nurses, Rosemary Cook.

Sir Terry said of his honorary award: “As a resident of Buckinghamshire for nearly forty years, and a Deputy Lieutenant of the County, an honorary degree from the County's university means a great deal to me. I'm naturally delighted to accept, and with great pride.''

Born and educated in Limerick, Ireland, Sir Terry now lives in Buckinghamshire. His first broadcast role was as a newsreader announcer with Radio Telefis Eireann (the Irish National Radio and TV Service), after which Terry moved to light entertainment as a disc jockey and host of television quiz and variety shows.

Between 1969 and 2009 Sir Terry presented a number of radio shows for the BBC including Wogan, and Wake Up To Wogan. His extensive television credits include hosting Points of View, Wogan: Now and Then, and 35 years of The Eurovision Song Contest. In addition, he continues to present BBC Children In Need and BBC Proms in the Park every year.

Sir Terry was knighted in 2005, and was created a Freeman of the City Of Limerick in 2007 and a Freeman of the City Of London in 2009. His numerous awards include the Sony Gold achievement Award, the Lifetime Achievement award at the TRIC Awards, and the award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting by the Broadcasting Press. Sir Terry currently presents a live weekly show on BBC Radio 2, Weekend Wogan, which features live music and special guests.
