MOST children who have a dream at nine have forgotten it by their tenth birthday. But Sophie Boyce of Beaconsfield has stayed true to her ambition to make films for over a decade. She spoke to Natasha Gaunt.
When asked how she remained so focused over the years Sophie said: "Because I did it. I didn’t just think about it; it became a lifestyle, I wrote every night and I still write every night"
19-year-old Sophie received her first camera aged 10, and proceeded to experiment with filmmaking enlisting local children for her cast.
She is just about to graduate from the prestigious Metropolitan Film School at Ealing Studios where she will screen her graduation project in October. She has been working on ‘Mache Man’, for three months now, a film which features many of the recurring themes of her work, namely children’s imagination and escapism.
With such a long list of achievements it’s difficult to believe that she is still a teenager; Sophie has already won a variety of awards for her filmmaking and set up her own production team at the tender age of 13.
In 2011 Sophie won the Channel 4 'Skins' Screenwriting Competition, earning herself a place in the Series 6 Writers Room and was subsequently hired to write for the on-line series.
In her short career so far she has received high praise from many directions; Virgin Media Short Reviews described her film ‘The Boy in the Water’ as "Absurdly good. Honestly one of the best shorts I've seen."
Sophie considers herself a writer more than a director but insisted on directing her latest project herself, commenting: "I had to, it’s like my baby." However she has had to fundraise the money for her latest venture which will cost an estimated £5,500, 47% of which she had raised so far.
The passion she has for her work clearly is paying off; she has an upcoming interview for a writing position with Channel 4 show Hollyoaks and is also in the writing stages of a TV series and Feature Film.
The teenager has high aspirations, hoping one day to work with Johnny Depp, Dakota Fanning, Ewan McGreggor and director Julie Taymor.
