The 38th instalment of the Bourne End One Day Congress will take place on April 1st. The compeition is, however, nothing to laugh about as it attracts players from all over the region. One day tournaments are commonplace across the country, but Bourne End's format is unusual in that it offers five 90 minute games rather than 6 lots of a 60 minute session. This, in theory, equates to better quality chess.

And, based on the strength of last year's field, people seem to appreciate this nuance. Chesham's Paul Georghiou won the top section a point clear of Bourne End's Andrew Smith, ex-Bourne End star Andy Hammond and Reading's Shawn Tavares. The toughness of the competition was illustrated by top seed Akash Jain finishing next to last.

It's not all about the pros though. Bourne End is open to everyone and the lower sections are just as fiercely competitive.
